City were stopped dead in their tracks, walloped by three clear goals in a grand-slam finish.
But I go along with their boss Malcolm Allison “I could not see Leeds scoring.”
For both teams had looked destined to a goal-less boring draw when bang, bang, bang it suddenly became a riotous, astonishing win for Leeds.
Three totally unexpected goals, two in the last five minutes, brought the crowd out of slumberland.
The trouble began for City in the 69th minute when Lorimer despatched one of those long distance specials from a free kick near the by-line. Cherry’s header shocked the lot as it went inches inside a post.
City should have scored in the 54th minute, Summerbee’s corner came out to Barrett but Reaney stationed under the bar, scooped the shot away.
The game snapped to life again in the 85th minute when Bremner played the game’s most artistic pass to Jones, who lost possession.
But Lorimer was on hand and his fierce drive nearly took off the roof of the net.
With less than a minute left, Bremner took a free kick on the left and Clarke stepped in and with a deflecting header put the seal on Leeds’ victory.
There were four bookings, Bremner, Yorath and Clarke for Leeds and City’s Lee. But it wasn’t a bad tempered game.
There was trouble for Summerbee. He injured a leg and later left Manchester Royal Infirmary with his right leg strapped.
