bury league cup 1972 to 73 action

Attacking from the start, much to the delight of most of the sardine-packed spectators, Bury took an early lead when winger Hamstead nipped the ball from a scramble in front of goal and lashed his shot high into the City net.
lt was delirium for the Shakers fans, and more was to come. Within 4 minutes the hosts were further in front with teenage Glaswegian Dougherty, in only his fourth senior game for the club, picking out Murray with a precision pass. The Bury inside forward, who was to end the season as the c|ub’s second top scorer, eased his way through City’s vulnerable middle and slid the ball wide of Healey. It stayed 2-0 at half-time.
City picked up steam after the break and bombarded the Bury goal but they couldn’t get past the courageous Forrest, though their former midfield star Bell crashed a shot against the woodwork.
It was a historic night for the Fourth Division club, the first time they had accounted for First Division opposition in the League Cup competition.

  1. Went to this game with my Dad. I was 14 and a man it’s fan. I still am. But we would watch the shakers every other week for a while and they became my second team. After crowds of 2to3000 this game was a revelation and is without question the best match I’ve ever been to. Dad got tickets not far from Malcolm Allison. By the end of the game he was that low in his seat he’d virtually disappeared. A magnificent night.

  2. One of those games for City. Boasting a fantastic forward line. Somehow persuaded Dad to take me. Don’t remember the game but do the stands with the big gap to the terrace. Stood behind the goal and was totally embarrassed as a teenager when Dad got hit by a shot going over the bar. Even more so the result!

  3. Was there as a 9 year old City fan with my older sister who is a Bury fan! I am still a City season ticket holder(oh how things have changed)?

  4. Aged 16 and an apprentice hairdresser, I went to this game with my boss, Frank, who lived in Bury and through his connections, bought tickets for me and another guy, Kevin in the main stand. The ground was a culture shock as it was the first time I’d visited a league ground outside the 1st division, but it was not as big a shock as I received by the end of the game. So desperate were we that with City 0-2 down and ten minutes remaining, City fans tried to have the game abandoned by running on the pitch and refusing to move, sadly, it didn’t work. City’s list of humiliations to lower league clubs has grown quite long since over the years, with the defeats to Halifax and Shrewsbury always talked about. I’m surprised that the Bury game is never mentioned, not that I’m proud of it. My nightmare didn’t end at the final whistle. I assumed that Frank would take me back into Manchester, instead, he dropped me off at Bolton Street station in Bury at 9.30pm and said that there’d be a train in the next half an hour which would take me to Manchester Victoria. Making my way home didn’t worry me, after all, I’d made it to three away games the previous season, the trouble was, I only had about 30p left and I doubted that it would be enough to pay my train fare to Victoria and bus fare from Manchester to Chorlton. I stood in the cold, dark deserted station, before deciding to catch the bus to Victoria instead and walking from the city centre to Brooks Bar, before finally catching a 62 bus home, arriving back at around 11.00pm. The things we do for the Blues, only to get the blues.
