PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 4TH JANUARY 1975
Two goals in three minutes sent Manchester City’s Cup hopes crashing in a classic tie at Maine Road this afternoon.
Mickey Burns, £175,000 buy from Blackpool last summer, put the skids under City after 61 minutes. Then newcomer Geoff Nulty, £120,000 recruit from Burnley last month, put Newcastle firmly in the driving seat with the second after 63 minutes.
What a tragedy for the Blues who had been in command throughout. But constantly they were denied by the brilliance of goalkeeper Ian McFaul.
He saved superbly from Bell, Tueart and Marsh at the height of City’s siege in a full blooded clash where both sides committed themselves to an attacking aggressive policy.
Marsh worked tirelessly to earn the vital breakthrough but again this did not seem City’s day. Doyle had another magnificent match against the always dangerous MacDonald, but on this occasion the menace came from elsewhere with City paying the penalty in full.
