CONWAY LEAVES COVENTRY SUFFERING
CYRIL CHAPMAN WRITING IN THE GUARDIAN 16TH MAY 1977
A headed goal from Conway soon after half-time enabled Manchester City to round off the season at Highfield Road, but left Coventry rueing a season of missed opportunities and facing a nerve-racking week as their First Division membership remains uncertain.
In a dull first half Manchester had no more serious ambitions than to try to slot Hartford in as a striker in the absence of Kidd and Tueart, and it was then, not later, that Coventry should have driven in hard and often. But when quick action was indicated their goalkeeper held irritating possession of the ball, there was congestion down the left flank where McDonald and Hutchison vied for the role of winger, and attackers threw away chances as if they were to be never ending. The aim when better took little account of an extraordinary goalkeeper.
Conway headed in from one of several corners from Barnes who hits them in at a most disconcerting speed and height.
The goal provoked Coventry into the required action and after this the Manchester skills were devoted to retaining their pleasant advantage. Corrigan relished the situation, beating out a shot from Beck which was the fiercest of the match and saving from Wallace, who earlier hit a post.
