PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 12TH MARCH 1977
Battling City overcame the double handicap of injury to skipper Mike Doyle and a Bryan Robson goal to turn in a magnificent performance against West Ham today.
All the old character and spirit came flowing back on the efforts to wipe out that 21st minute goal in an incident-crammed match.
The effort never flagged as Brian Kidd dropped back to do a magnificent defensive job alongside Watson. Joe Corrigan made a thrilling penalty save to keep City’s hopes of salvaging the match firmly alive.
City’s gallant attack was unlucky to find Mervyn Day in fine form, particularly in the first half when he defied both Peter Barnes and Asa Hartford.
