Dennis Tueart revived City’s faltering title challenge last night with a controversial penalty that ended Sunderland’s run of six games without defeat.
But Sunderland showed that they are in the mood to launch further attempts to claw themselves free of relegation.
Despite this win, City have still to recover the poise and style which took them through 17 undefeated matches.
There was no doubt about the way Tueart hammered in the penalty, his third in successive weeks, against his old club.
But there was a definite doubt in my mind about its legitimacy, because Jackie Ashurst seemed to play the ball before Gary Owen sprawled on the ground.
Sunderland thought so, too, and protested heatedly to referee Bert Newsome both before Tueart took the kick and afterwards…
