PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 8TH JANUARY 1977
Manchester City battled bravely to wipe out the 44th minute lead danger-man Willie Johnstone had given Albion at Maine Road this afternoon.
They monopolised play for long periods, desperately seeking that killer touch in front of goal to swing the tie their way.
The build-up from the back and the midfield was good, but Albion were solid in defence, and more than a little lucky.
Asa Hartford worked tremendously hard against his former colleagues. There was an equally prodigious effort from the front runners, although it seemed that little would go right for them.
But Brian Kidd finally gave City the goal they deserved.
