Boro substitute Alf Wood made a dramatic impact on this tedious game when he came on for the last 8 minutes.
City’s defence wobbled and a diving header from Souness, which beat Corrigan, was only marginally offside. Seconds later Peter Brine hit a post.
But for far too long the only award these supposed title contenders looked capable of winning was a Nobel Peace prize.
It was 25 minutes before the game’s first shot, Joe Royle was well off target, and then Asa Hartford had a goal disallowed…
