PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 27TH NOVEMBER 1976
City carried the first half luck at St Andrews then firmly grasped control over Birmingham after the break, playing skilful football in an entertaining clash.
Joe Corrigan was the early hero with two superb saves as Birmingham threatened to tear the Blues to pieces. Kenny Burns and Trevor Francis gave City’s central defenders an exacting test of character and temperament.
With Dave Watson and Mike Doyle tightening up on the home danger-men after the break, City looked a more purposeful and powerful team as they aggressively carried the game to the home side.
Dennis Tueart was again in dazzling form, but missed a glorious chance created by the hardworking Brian Kidd and Joe Royle, Asa Hartford had another fine game in midfield.
