TALBOT WALKS TALL
DAVID MILLER WRITING IN THE DAILY EXPRESS 25TH OCTOBER 1976
Manchester City ran headlong into the most dynamic 90 minute player in the League, Brian Talbot of Ipswich.
With a performance of awesome physical proportions, Talbot man-of-the-match as Ipswich lifted themselves ahead of City on goal difference, to fifth place in the struggle between 16 teams for First Division supremacy.
This match was going to measure City’s title challenge, manager Tony Book had promised. Instead, Ipswich indicated, with unswerving clarity, that they have their eyes set once again on the summit.
… With Talbot out of action for much of last season, covering the pitch from penalty area to penalty area, Ipswich pinned City back in the first half and outclassed them in the second. Scottish international Asa Hartford never answering the fire of the East Anglian dragon.
… Ipswich had 12 shots on target in the first half, no less than 8 of them by young John Wark, midfield deputy for Eric Gates. Corrigan has seldom shown more all-round confidence.
… It was Doyle’s error, seven minutes into the second half which allowed Trevor Whymark to hit the only goal from Mick Mill’s cross. An equaliser by Tueart 8 minutes from time was disallowed because Kidd had crept offside in a position clearly distracting ‘keeper Paul Cooper.
… City’s title bid is far from over, but they need a controlling influence in midfield, until Owen matures, which Hartford at present is not providing…
