KIDD PROMISES MUCH

ALAN LYONS WRITING IN THE GUARDIAN 23RD AUGUST 1976
Manchester City can feel pleased with themselves. For the last few seasons, their away record has kept all championship thoughts in the realms of fantasy and it was no mean feat to pick up a point at Leicester, who also begin the season daydreaming of the title.
Manchester start the season with two new forwards, both surprise buys. Kidd from Arsenal and Conway from Fulham. On this evidence Kidd will be more inspired. He seemed to combine instinctively with Tueart while Conway had an anonymous introduction.
There has always been talent in the Manchester side: the problem has been to harness it. And for an hour the ghosts of their past came back to haunt them.
Leicester, in spite of long defensive spells, look the more confident, with the foundations of a good victory seemingly laid by Alderson’s neat goal in the seventh minute.
Then Donachie, who for a skilful player makes the most awful mistakes, misdirected his back-pass and Alderson drew Corrigan and shot hard and low across him and into the net off the far post.

Manchester huffed and puffed as Leicester remained calm until, in the 61st minute, Tueart decided to play on his own. He collected the ball on the left, jinked past Woollett and hit a long hard shot past Wallington. Two minutes later, Leicester were ahead again when Blockley headed on a corner and, with Corrigan caught and unsure between the goal-line and six yard area, Garland turned the ball into the net.
The home crowd were still celebrating that one when Manchester swept away, found the Leicester defence square and eased the ball through for a grateful, unmarked, Royle to score from a few yards out.

Leicester still refused to be panicked and in the last few minutes Corrigan, who has become a good goalkeeper, saved well from Alderson and Lee.
Leicester can be bemused at dropping a point, they will do less work at Filbert Street and win easily, but need more bite to tackle the Liverpools of this world. Manchester? If they can keep up this urgency in away matches, they might win the title.
