Kidd and Tueart blast a back in business warning
Magnificent Manchester City moved in to the last eight of the League Cup last night in a style that says there’s hardly a team left in the competition who can stop them. And they did it the hard way.
They revealed all the character manager Tony Book demands after seeing Brian Kidd’s 34th minute opener wiped out by an inexplicable penalty incident on the stroke of half – time when Mick Channon pushed Trevor Whymark.
City could have brooded at the injustice and surrendered. Instead they showed their steel with a Dennis Tueart winner to convince the football world that, after a lamentable early November they are back in business in a big way.
…Man of the moment Peter Barnes gave an early declaration of intent as he beat four tackles on a run through the middle only to see Paul Cooper deprive him of the classic finish by scuttling out to clear with his feet.
….From a Barnes corner Booth rose to connect with a glancing header and Kidd followed up to stab over the line.
Ironically the goal seemed to give the subdued East Anglian side the biggest lift…and seconds before half-time Ipswich got the luckiest of breaks to equalise. Channon pushed Trevor Whymark, and Whymark himself tucked the spot kick low inside a post.
…Tony Book’s brigade kept a commendable cool with Asa Hartford, Kidd and young Paul Power refusing to give an inch in the midfield.
Suddenly City were the bosses again as the transfer listed but ever effective Tueart reclaimed the lead, following up on Kidd’s telling cross goal header from a Barnes’ free kick.
The only scar on a great night was a spate of late bookings.
