PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 3RD APRIL 1980
It’s still pressure-point for luckless Manchester City.
However, I believe the Blues now have about as much chance of being relegated as neighbouring Manchester United have of winning the title, and that’s precious little.
… A further point was painfully extracted from last night’s 1-1 draw with Everton, a game that smacked of fierce local rivalry and tension through trouble, rather than sheer ability, from two sides assembled at a cost of more than £5M.
At times, the passing by both sides was abysmal, and my sympathy went out to the fans.
But at least Everton’s ability to lift themselves and make a fightof it saved the match from becomimg a total write off.
Steve Daley’s 72nd minute clanger that handed Everton the equaliser put away by Andy King, was the City record buy’s second error of what would otherwise have been an excellent performance.
His first was a 38th minute caution for dissent.
It was Daley and Dennis Tueart, allied to the cliical finishing of Kaziu Deyna, who brought a touch of class to this otherwise drab encounter.
Deyna chipped in a glorious goal that at last seemed to put the Blues on course for the first win since they had beaten Everton at Goodison on December 22.
It was a stroke of genius from a player who spends most of his time in the reserves, although on this showing he has got to be utilised in City’s remaining matches.
A second from Deyna, with an even more breathtaking effort three minutes from half time, would surely have wrapped up both points, but Tueart was offside.
