JOHN DAVIES WRITING IN THE DAILY EXPRESS 22ND OCTOBER 1979
John Bond and Malcolm Allison typified the agony and ecstacy of Soccer management after Norwich dropped a home point to Manchester City.
“Malcolm has a fine young team battling and running for him,” said Bond after the 2-2 draw.
“They’re an honest bunch of lads and I don’t think I have seen a young central defender cope as well or as professionally as Tommy Caton did. All that doesn’t alter the fact that my players are capable of performing like men, that is what gave us a flying start to the season. But they played like boys against Manchester City and I told them so when they came in a goal down at half time.”
Allison, by comparison, was glowing with pride at the mountains his young Maine Road squad are currently scaling.
They mauled Norwich for much of the match and continued the remarkable run that has earned ten points from the last six games.
David Bennett, the 20 year old coloured lad, along with Caton, kept the Manchester side firing on all cylinders.
Bustling through from deep positions Bennett claimed Manchester City’s goals in the 19th and 77 minutes.
A 63rd minute penalty, after Fashanu was pushed in the back, which Allison considered was a harsh decision, was tucked away by Kevin Bond.
This followed a snatched 50th minute equaliser by Martin Peters.
Asked what he thought about Norwich striker Kevin Reeves, for whom he bid £1.25 million a few weeks ago, Allison replied: “I didn’t take too much notice of him, but I’ll take Martin Peters off John Bond’s hands any time.”
