A REPORT PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 1ST NOVEMBER 1979
After a 1-1 finish in the first meeting of their third round League Cup tie at Maine Road, a solitary goal by Robson (12th min.) provided the Wearsiders with a passport to the next round in the replay just seven
days later.
Robson had already been thwarted by Joe Corrigan before he netted. The decisive moment came when Chisholm headed down to debutant Hawley who took control and squared a pass precisely to Robson. The unmarked striker, noting Corrigan off his line, cleverly chipped the goal from almost 25 yards.
lnspired by Lee, converted from striker to midfield, Sunderland tested Corrigan through Hawley (twice) and Buckley and the Blues played all their best football in their own half where it caused no trouble.
Without Willie Donachie, taken off with a recurring ankle injury in the 26th min., it was an uphill job. But in the second half the Blues had the bit between their teeth and threatened through Kaziu Deyna, twice stopped by ’keeper Turner. Steve Daley, the most progressive player, almost scored with a volley and tried to generate response in the
miserable conditions, a night of non-stop rain.
Sunderland lost Buckley with a suspected ankle fracture, but had Lee and Rostron to thank for winning through.
“They should get only half their wages because they played only half a match. They played the first half as if it were a benefit match” complained team manager Malcolm Allison of his side afterwards.
