Manchester City found Aston Villa keeper Jimmy Rimmer in magnificent form at Villa Park.
Rimmer stopped a blistering shot from Kevin Reeves to keep the scoresheet blank, and was again in action to save from Phil Boyer, back from his loan spell with Hong Kong club Bulova.
Andy May hobbled off injured near the end to allow substitute Steve Kinsey into the action.
