City faced Woolwich Arsenal at Hyde Road during a heat wave. The temperature was 90 degrees in the shade and the City players fell like ninepins in the unbearable heat,
The first to ‘drop’ was Irvine Thornley, after 32 minutes. Before half-time City lost Conlon. Then Grieve stayed in the dressing room at the interval. No substitutes were allowed, of course, and there was no sign of the heat relenting. Conlon returned but almost immediately Dorsett collapsed. Kelso followed. Then Buchan, City finished the game with SIX men! They lost 4-1.
