REPORT FROM MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 19TH MARCH 1983
Manchester City were sucked further into relegation trouble after a 4-1 mauling at Southampton to leave John Benson waiting for his first win as a manager.
The Blues were rocked by a first half hat-trick from Saints’ Steve Moran and never recovered after a disastrous start.
City, hit by injuries and suspensions, and with teenager Geoff Lomax making his debut at right back, fell behind to Moran’s first goal after only five minutes.
Ian Baird grabbed the second after 19 minutes and Moran rifled in two more before the break.
City were down and out and even a 48th minute goal from Kevin Reeves didn’t inspire much fight.
