City, chasing their first League win at Ipswich for 20 years, were always second best after John Wark put the home side in front after 22 minutes.
Kevin O’Callaghan and Eric Gates should have put Ipswich further in front but they squandered clear chances.
And desperate City brought off Graham Baker after 70 minutes and sent Nicky Reid into the action to try to rescue their unbeaten six-game run.
