Nobody worked harder for Manchester City than Dennis Tueart on a night when hard work simply was not enough.
Seldom did City play like a team tucked in behind Liverpool at the summit of the First Division, having to rely on a penalty after 35 minutes.
I reckoned it was a harsh decision by referee Arnold Challinor at that because Mark Wright, Southampton’s 19 year old defender, seemed to fall into Kevin Reeves without any intent. Amid protests, Peter Shilton guessed wrongly the direction of Tueart’s shot.
It was a cruel experience for young Wright, but he recovered from it within four minutes to equalise.
