A GOAL FOR DAVID PHILLIPS
FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 20TH JANUARY 1990
Wimbledon paid their first-ever visit to Maine Road and City marked the occasion by winning comprehensively 3-0. The Blues were unchanged (and unbeaten) for the fifth successive League game and the victory over the Londoners meant that 11 valuable points had been accumulated on the promotion trail since Boxing Day.
The stability of the team was helped by the solid defensive work of Ken McNaught, on loan from West Brom, who soon struck up a good understanding with his new colleagues, and the goalscoring contributions from Gordon Smith who scored 3 in four games.
The Blues were on top throughout the Wimbledon game, although they were letdown in the first half by some careless passing and it took 44 minutes for the opening goal to arrive. A Power throw-in reached Smith via Kinsey and the Scot chipped accurately over Beasant.
Power set up the second for David Phillips, one of his regular powerhouse shots that gave Beasant no chance, Plymouth receiving a bonus of £15,000 as the game was the Welshman’s 25th League appearance for the Blues and a further payment was due under the terms of his transfer.
After 78 minutes, Baker finalised the scoreline by slipping home a Smith cross after Melrose had bamboozled the visitors.
With 5 minutes left, Melrose was carried off having suffered a late tackle by Gage…
