FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 6TH JANUARY 1990
The following week saw a ding-dong battle for supremacy when the Blues visited Huddersfield. In the final outcome, further valuable
promotion points were obtained, but City had to use all their know-how and resilience to gain the victory. The Blues’ defence was outstanding, McCarthy in particular, and this was the foundation for the City success.
Although Kinsey hit a Town post, and Melrose, who suffered a broken nose, missed an easy chance, it was Huddersfield’s ‘keeper, Cox, who took the eye at the other end as he made fine saves from Phillips and Baker. Our two goals arrived in the last quarter of an hour. Smith hit the first after Clive Wilson had tied up the home defence, and it was fitting that Wilson should grab the second with 2 minutes left, a just reward for his excellent play.
So maybe the exit from the F.A. Cup would not be such a disaster. The Blues had one target only, promotion!
