FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY MAGAZINE JANUARY 1996
When this clash took place both teams were hoping that their efforts by the end of the season would result in promotion from the Second Division. Most neutral observers on the day thought that City looked the better-equipped team to achieve that target.
… The Blues went into overdrive right from the start with David Phillips ferociously hitting a post, and the ball wasn’t cleared as quickly as it should have been by the Leeds defence. Jim Melrose pounced for his fifth goal in seven games and we were in front.
Peter Lorimer was the provider for the Leeds equaliser. He found space on the right and floated a perfect ball in for ex- Man United player Andy Ritchie to head past Alex Williams. Leeds lost Ritchie just after that with a sprained ankle but they battled away to keep City from taking a further lead. They themselves could have gone in front when McCluskey crossed from the right, but there wasn’t a soul in front of an empty net.
