FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH DECEMBER 1989
… The promotion bandwagon rolled on, aided and abetted by the regularity of Melrose’s goals and a settled team. Next victims were Charlton at the Valley, City recording a 3-1 win and moving into 5th place.
The writing was on the wall early on, ‘keeper Johns allowing a Kinsey shot to slither out of his hands, but he then atoned for this by keeping firm hold of a stinging 25 yard Power effort.
Phillips gave City the lead after 13 minutes with one of his specials, a blistering free-kick which found the top corner. The impressive Smith, having a fine game, got the second after Kinsey and Melrose set him up for his 9th goal of the season.
McCarthy hadn’t trained all week but his leg problem stood up well to the test, although Lee got past him to beat Williams just before the break. But the game was sealed by Melrose with five minutes left, beating Johns from 20 yards.
