West Ham United, their first League title so near yet so far, are beginning to fret. Last night they struggled to break down Manchester City’s sweeper system at Upton Park, and needed a first half penalty to gain their narrow victory.
Nevertheless the win has taken West Ham above Manchester United into third place in the First Division, two points behind Everton and four behind the leaders, Liverpool, over whom they have a match in hand…
… There were moments in the second half when Manchester City, given a little composure near goal themselves, could have thoroughly ruined the start of what promises to be one of the most momentous weeks in the London club’s history.
Phillips wasted a chance to bring the scores level with a wild shot, McCarthy went much closer two minutes later, and the worried West Ham fans whistled the closing minutes away…
