Acting manager Steve Burtenshaw insisted after this impressive show that Arsenal have a great future.
Burtenshaw, in command since Don Howe quit nine days ago, saw his men triumph despite the absence of Steve Williams and Tony Woodcock, and having Martin Keown sent off in the 73rd minute.
“We’ve got a lot going for us,” said Burtenshaw. “I’m not expecting anything for myself at the end of the season. But the spirit here is tremendous and the ability of the young players is most impressive. I told them to forget the politics and go out and show what they could on the field for the fans.”
The Gunners responded with a victory that ended a run of three defeats in which they failed to score under Burtenshaw.
But Burtenshaw had little sympathy for Keown, who got his marching orders for a foul after having been booked in the first half.
Stewart Robson produced the match winner in the 67th minute.
