REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE 2ND MARCH 1986
Oxford scored their first-ever goals at Maine Road to record only their second away win of the season. Struggling City never recovered from John Aldridge‘s opening goal in the 13th minute and left the field at the end to a storm of boing from their own fans. Jeremy Charles netted a second for the visitors in the 39th minute and Aldridge soared again in the 61st minute. It was his 21st goal of the season and was close to a hat trick when he hit the bar later.
Oxford hit back when Clements deflected a header towards his own goal but Nixon raced out to beat Charles to the ball. But Oxford kept up the pressure and took a shock lead in lhe 13th minute. Slatter floated a long ball into the area and Aldridge took advantage of a mistake by Clernents to score his 20th goal of the season.
The goal gave Oxford a boost. They had City‘s shaky defence in more trouble to gain two comers.
Briggs was booked for a foul on Lillis as Ciiy struggled to gel back on terms. Oxford slruck again in lhe 39th minute, Rhoades-Brown crossed and three City defenders missed the ball which Charles drove into lhe net.
Lillis had a chance to reduce the arrears but he headed wide from Reid’s free kick and Simpson missed a chance. Oxford went further ahead in lhe 61st minule. Aldridge netted his second goal when he steered home a centre from Rhoades-Brown.
Was there that day horror show by city but it was a good Oxford team with the likes of John Aldridge playing
