In November 1985, I was finally given my first team debut in the Full Members Cup at home to Sunderland. I was 17, and I’d been sent over to train with the first team a few days before to take part in a five-a-side game. Billy McNeill was a very hands-on manager and always around, and he’d always let you know that he was keeping aneye on you with a ‘you played well yesterday’ comment or similar every now and then. It would never be a long conversation, but he’d always make you feel wanted and let you know he was aware of everything.
John Beresford also got the od to go over and train and I was named on the bench.
The competition wasn’t that popular as a whole, with less than 7,000 inside Maine Road, but I didn’t care. This was what I’d been waiting for.
I came on with a short time to go, we drew 2-2, and then it was down to a penalty shoot-out. Skipper Kenny Clements said “Make yourself a name, go and take one.”
I was well up for taking a penalty and went over to Billy McNeill to put my name down, but he said, “Nah, you’re not taking one.” I think he wanted to protect me in case I missed, but I was as confident as I always was and fancied it. We won 4-2 on penalties as it happened and progressed to the next round. As for me, I’d played for City’s first team…
