…Current accounts of the match all place the blame for the accident on the wooden fence that surrounded the pitch, but this seems to be incorrect, as Woosnam himself described “I went out to tackle Lowe, the Newcastle outside right, and as he was going to centre I took the ball from his toes, but the winger’s swing of the foot could not be delayed, and it met my right leg.”
A City fan of the time wrote his usual diary entry following the game , and it makes fascinating reading.
“I made my usual trip to the player’s entrance for autographs, and stood amongst a silent crowd of sympathisers as Max, still smiling cheerfully was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. A small boy detached himself from the onlookers and calmly asked the injured player to sign his book. Before any of the amazed spectators could shoo the boy away, Max asked the stretcher bearers to stop for a moment so he could sign the boo
