City were facing a United side who had won all of their league games so far this season and when Mick McCarthy was put under pressure by Norman Whiteside the centre back’s suicidal back pass to Alex Williams left the City custodian with no option but to bring down Mark Hughes for a penalty that was easily converted and City were certain to add to United’s 100% record.
Although two further goals were added by a rampant United team, they could easily have scored more with City’s defence in disaray for most of the game.
