Brian Marwood came to the rescue of struggling Sheffield Wednesday to sink a superior-looking City in the final, dramatic third of this game.
Trailing 1-0, City had not only hit back with a deserved 50th minute goal from Paul Simpson, but seemed set for a merited winning goal when Marwood moved in with clinical speed and skill.
In the 68th minute, City’s Neil McNab, deserving a better fate than he’s getting, followed that own goal at Coventry last week by seeing a loose defensive ball go drifting. Marwood dashed in, rounded goalkeeper Alex Williams and the ball beat Kenny Clements running back.
City hit back again with power and pace with Wednesday’s bench looking anxious until that man Marwood struck again.
In the 83rd minute Wednesday captain Mike Lyons floated a long ball upfield and Marwood zipped in to hammer home Wednesday’s third and final nail in the Maine Road coffin.
Wednesday’s first goal had also come by courtesy of a City slip from those normally sure feet of Sammy McIlroy. In the 27th minute he attempted to play the ball away from his own dead-ball line, was dispossessed and gain that Marwood man was on hand. He touched the ball to Siggy Jonsson and the Icelandic International crossed for Gary Thompson to net an easy goal.
City’s equaliser from Simpson was of similar parentage, David Phillips moved up to leave Nigel Worthington and Paul Hart stranded in magnificent fashion on the goal-line, before crossing for Simson to hutle in and score.
In the second half City were on top sweeping forward in a number of moves which stretched the Wednesday defence with Phillips seeing goalkeeper Martin Hodge save with his legs, and Steve Kinsey just failing to collect a Simpson cross…
