This fixture was billed as a real relegation six pointer, with Leicester lying in 18th place in the table, and the visitors two places and three points adrift. but with a game in hand. Leicester had been boosted by a 4-1 midweek victory over Queens Park Rangers whilst the Sky Blues had not managed a win in any of their previous ten outings, and the Foxes confidence was boosted further alter just five minutes when full-back Simon Morgan saw his long-range drive cross the line before Perry Suckling could claw it away. In fact Gary McAllister followed in to ram the rebound home to make sure and the referee, Kelvin Morton, later confirmed that be did not actually award a goal until the follow-up. However, as photographic evidence later confirmed Morgan’s effort, controversy was avoided and most sources agreed to award the strike to the England Under-21 defender.
McAllister also had a hand in the second, his free kick was only parried in the 28th minute and Alan Smith was on hand to net from close range. Smith, incidentally, had been transferred to Arsenal for £800,000 only two days earlier, but had been loaned back by the Gunners for the remainder of the season to try to help the Foxes avoid relegation. Six minutes later, McAllister was involved again, effectively making the game safe when latching onto a weak back pass by Steve Redmond to roll the ball past Suckling for number three.
The final goal, at the Filbert Street end, was something of a rarity, a neatly placed header from midfielder Paul Ramsey after 80 minutes.
