Defender Paul McGrath showed Manchester United’s goal-shy forwards the way in the Old Trafford derby this afternoon.
Mcgrath put the reds in front in the 62nd minute from a Gordon Strachan corner with a header.
The ball could have taken a deflection on the way through a crowded goalmouth but the goal was no more than United deserved after dominating the game.
Mick McCarthy and Kenny Clements performed heroics at the heart of the City defence to keep the match balanced on a knife-edge before a crowd of 48,619.
City’s best chance fell to Graham Baker in the 75th minute but Bryan Robson cleared the danger.
Robson rammed home United’s superiority, scoring in the 85th minute.
