Imre Varadi struck at the double to boost Manchester City’s hopes of a Wembley return in the Full Members Cup at Maine Road this afternoon.
He shot the Blues into a 21st minute leas which Second Division Ipswic cancelled out three minutes later through Kevin Wilson.
But a minute into the second half Varadi got up well at the near post to head in an inch perfect ross from the left by young England winger Paul Simpson.
They were Varadi’s first goals of the year and City’s first in three games although the quarter final tie remained evenly balanced with Tony Humes again equalising for Ipswich after 50 minutes.
… City really found themselves up against it when Ipswich took the lead from a penalty.
Kevin Wilson sprinted between Clements and Suckling but was then pulled down by the City goalkeeper and the referee had no hesitationin pointing to the spot.
Brennan scored easily to give Ipswich the lead for the first time in this see-saw tussle.
Ipswich scorers were Tony Humes, Mark Brennan and Kevin Wilson
