…Back at City, we were in decline and the goals dried up for me, too, but the first home game of the new year against Oxford United would see me back in the physio room, this time with a broken back.
I was backing into the Oxford half as a goal kick came towards me and Billy Whitehurst, a thug of a footballer, must have run from ten yards behind me and smashed into my back with his knee.
It felt like he’d tried to snap me in half. He’d broken one of the wings off my vertebrae and I was lucky he hadn’t cracked my spine. I was disappointed there was little or no reaction from my team-mates because nobody said jack shit to him, probably because of his reputation…
