… Then Frizz asked if I could play up front on my own against defending champions Everton. I was happy to do that because I loved having space where I could make my own runs on either side, and I was looking forward to it.
I’d been to Everton as a kid and they were the benchmark at the time, so to score my seventh goal in six game against them was satisfying, not least because it was my best goal yet.
I remember David White was chasing a big punt upfield and got a touch that came my way. I loved taking shots early and I was thinking, ‘You know what? I’m going to have a punt here; so as the ball came down, I hit it on an angle from 25 yards across Neville Southall and into the far corner. It was a sweet hit and the fact it was against a team of top jockeys made it even more enjoyable. We lost 3-1 but it was a good memory for me…
