THE LORD MAYOR IS INTRODUCED TO THE TEAMS
Sheffield United were the first side to face City at Maine Road when they played in the stadium’s opening fixture.
…It was an amazing game. United’s keeper, Gough, was replaced by outfield player Panting after 30 minutes, and the new keeper immediately faced a penalty taken by Frank Roberts, Panting saved the shot, causing Roberts to enter the record books as the first man to miss a penalty at Maine Road.
Despite the penalty miss, the Blues won 2-1 with the historic first goal scored by Horace Barnes.
