REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 11TH OCTOBER 1986
Northern Ireland international Ian Stewart inspired Newcastle United to a vital victory in this crucial bottom of the table match against Manchester City.
Stewart had probably his best ever game in a black and white shirt since his transfer from Queens Park Rangers as he helped lift Newcastle off the bottom of the First Division table.
Yet things looked ominous for United in the opening stages when City with five players under the age of 20, easily cut through their slow moving defence.
Indeed after 10 minutes a White shot appeared to have crossed the line after hitting the crossbar but there was no award given.
Then 7 minutes later Simpson headed against the Newcastle post with keeper Gary Kelly beaten.
So it came as no surprise when Simpson gave City a 30 minuute lead, when he was left unmarked at the far post, to easily tuck in the cross from White.
Newcastle’s luck was certainly in when City skipper Ken Clements handled unneccessarily in the penalty area and Neil McDonald stepped up to knock in the equaliser with his first competitive penalty.
Newcastle’s luck was again in within seconds of the resumption when Redmond’s shot bounced back into play off the front of the post.
Newcastle cashed in on their luck within seconds when Stephenson cut along the edge of the penalty area to allow Gascoigne to drive a left foot shot into the corner of the net.
Newcastle struck again three minutes later when Stewart jigged his way to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Tony Cunningham to head in against one of his former clubs.
