This was City’s first ever encounter with Reading, who were the newly crowned champions of Division Three (South). A crowd of 22,379, paying total receipts of £1,240, watched an evenly contested match at Elm Park which Reading eventually won 1-0, the only goal of the game being scored by centre—torward Sid Helliwell who rounded City keeper Goodchild to coolly slot home the winner.
