PAUL STEWART SCORES THE EQUALISER
ADAPTED FROM PETER GARDNER’S REPORT IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 19TH DECEMBER 1987
Paul Stewart’s 18th goal of the season brought Manchester City back into a derby cliffhanger at Maine Road this afternoon.
Oldham Athletic had taken a 12th minute lead through Tommy Wright with more than a little help from Blues goalkeeper Perry Suckling, playing his first game of the season.
Wright’s initial attempt was pushed onto the crossbar by Suckling with the rebound striking him on the back to go into the net and opinion was divided as to whether it was an own goal.
In the 67th minute Oldham scored the winner… Palmer broke on the right and crossed to the far post where Wright again made it an afternoon of anguish for Suckling with a header into the far corner.
