City faced an uphill struggle from the start at Anfield today. They were under pressure for virtually the whole of a one-sided match in which Liverpool were denied only by their own carelessness and the bravery of gallant goalkeeper Joe Corrigan.
The defence was constantly under pressure, with Mike Doyle, as fiercely competitive as ever, and Dave Watson doing a magnificent job.
City rarely moved forward with conviction. Neither Dennis Tueart nor Joe Royle could get the better of the resolute Liverpool defence and Ray Clemence, apart from an early save from Doyle, was rarely troubled.
