Manchester City’s first away win since January 1986 carried them into the next round at Molineux last night. A goal behind from the first leg, they drew level through Hinchcliffe in the first half and then, when extra-time looked likely, Gidman snatched victory with
a goal from McNab’s free-kick.
The result left Wolves kicking themselves. The Fourth Division team hit the bar twice, a post once and squandered three easy chances which, had they been taken, would have left Second Division City no margin for a late rally.
Wolves began with an attacking policy, trying to protect their 2-1 advantage from the first match. The Manchester goal. occupied by Nixon instead of Mimms, not available because of a loan arrangement with Everton, was under pressure for long periods.
But Wolves squandered their chances and Bull was unlucky when his shot hit the crossbar.
Then, in the 14th minute, City took the lead.
City, seeing no future in being permanently on the defensive, launched a full-scale counter attack. They poured forward with both full-backs taking a hand. Gidman centred and, as Stewart headed the ball on, Hinchcliffe got through the Wolves defence to shoot passed the diving Kendall.
Wolves stepped up the pace but continued to miss their chances, hitting the crossbar and a post. Falling back disappointed, they were ripe for exploitation. City saw their chance and when McNab squared his free-kick across the Wolverhampton goal, Gidman
was there to put the ball in for a superb victory.
