FROM THE PRESS BOX
REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY INDEPENDANT (DUBLIN) 29TH JANUARY 1989
Manchester City were swept aside by a rampant performance from Third Division Brentford, who reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1971. And the man who did all the damage was Manchester born Striker Gary Blissett who scored twice.
He grabbed his first after only nine minutes, stabbing home Richard Cadette’s low cross. City had only ‘keeper Andy Dibble to thank for the fact that it was not more, but he could do nothing as Keith Jones cracked home the second from the edge of the box four minutes before half time.
City briefly pulled themselves together after the break and substitute Nigel Gleghorn pulled one back with a fierce shot in the 58th minute. Nine minutes later Blissett struck again as Roger Stanislaus’s low cross caused chaos and he rammed home from close range.
