It was a sad Wolves team that Manchester City faced in November 1975. They would eventually be relegated at the end of the season and the defeat inflicted by the Blues was one of eight at Molineux.
There was a liveliness about the Wanderers in the early stages of the game, indeed John Richards and Steve Kindon caused Joe Corrigan some problems, though none that he couldn’t handle – but this evaporated once City had been awarded a penalty in the 28th minute.
‘Keeper Gary Pierce was caught stranded and full back Geoff Palmer lived up to his surname with a double-handed save. Uncharacteristically, Dennis Tueart hit the bar from the spot but in swept Asa Hartford to head home. Four minutes later Hartford and Tueart nimbly set up a scoring chance for the up-and-coming Peter Barnes, as they danced through the sliding tackles of the desperate home defenders.
Manager Tony Book was full of praise for Corrigan’s contribution but was even more delighted with that of Joe Royle, who was playing as a solitary striker, and making a grand job of it.
When the Blues were awarded a corner, no fewer than FIVE defenders were marking Royle, so Mike Doyle decided to help out. In doing so, he collided with the referee and all except Hartford looked at the undignified heap. Hartford merely gazed at the ball and made it 3-0.
One more goal to go to complete Wolves’ misery and this came from Tueart to atone for his penalty miss. Royle dispossessed Mike Bailey and switched the ball for Tueart to complete the 4-0 rout. It was City’s 14th game without defeat.
