GOALS FOR TREVOR MORLEY AND STEVIE REDMOND
FROM THE PRESS BOX
REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY MERCURY 27TH NOVEMBER 1988
Oxford left Maine Road in despair last night after having Victory snatched from their grasp in the last four minutes.
Brian Horton’s struggling side had clung onto the lead for almost an hour. But, within sight of only their second win in seven League games they suddenly wilted under City’s Incessant, second half pressure
Trevor Morley struck the equaliser in the 86th minute with a clever overhead shot and two minutes later Oxford were in disarray when City captain Steve Redmond headed home.
Horton shook his head in dismay and Striker Martin Foil hung his in shame. Foil had had a great chance to wrap the match up for Oxford when David Bardsley’s ball sent him racing clear in the 71st minute. But with only Andy Dibble to beat Foil screwed his shot horribly wide,
The Oxford Striker had also squandered an opening early in the first half, chipping the ball into the side netting. after skirting round Dibble’s challenge. Richard Hill showed the way with a 25-yard thunderbolt after 34 minutes, a candidate for goal of the season. Yet his mate from non-league and Northampton Town Days, Morley eventually emerged as the game’s most influential player.
Morley took over in Midfield when City controversially substituted Neil McNab with youngster Jason Beckford, and he was right on the spot with the spectacular equaliser.
