REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 15TH OCTOBER 1988
Larne teenager Michael Hughes, a young man with a big future, made his debut for Manchester City today and contributed to their success over Plymouth before being substituted after an hour’s play.
17 year old Hughes, a highly impressive schoolboy international, played a number of senior games last season for Carrick Rangers before moving across to Maine Road.
It was defender Brian Gayle’s first League goal for Manchester City which kept them up with the Second Division leaders and put an end to Plymouth’s unbeaten League record.
But Gayle’s goal, an unstoppable far post header from full back Andy Hinchcliffe’s 49th minute corner, proved sufficient to end Plymouth’s workmanlike challenge.
It was City’s sixth victory in seven League and Cup matches against the Devon club in the last 14 months.
