PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL
After the headyheights of the away victory last week, City turned in the worst performance of the season.
Against a well organised and disciplined Burnley side, the Blues carelessly gave the ball away with irritating frequency. At the same time they failed to attack with conviction s they defended their unbeaten home record.
… A first minute injury to striker Joe Royle, who finally had to go off 58 minutes later, hindered plans and only Peter Barnes looked capable of breaking the deadlock.
City’s midfield men were forced to work overtime to contain the busy Burnley side. Asa Hartford had another fine match, receiving excellent support from Colin Bell and Alan Oakes.
