United were carrying all before them in their Premier League debut season when Manchester City did their first-footing act on New Year’s Day.
They were scarcely made welcome by United who, with centre—half Brian Kilcline making his one and only Premier League start for the club, poured forward from the start and harvested two goals in 17 first—half minutes from goal machine Andy Cole.
Cole went into the game on an amazing 25 goals forthe. season and ended it on 27 as he put the icing on United’s very tasty cake.
After 28 minutes an Alan Kernaghan clearance fell to Scott Sellars who immediately crossed for Peter Beardsley to head down and Cole to fire past City keeper Tony Coton. Moments before half-time Lee Clark opened up the visitors’ defence and released the ball perfectly for Cole to time his run through the offside trap and ram home Number Two.
City battled without success to get back into the match but were able to make little `impression on Kevin Keegan’s super-charged Newcastle.
