Salute Joe Royle’s long overdue goals by all means, but hand the lion’s share of glory to Manchester City’s three current England stars.
Dave Watson, Colin Bell and Dennis Tueart ripped the heart out of Newcastle United and played themselves into Wednesday’s international lineup for the friendly clash with Switzerland in Basle.
Watson destroyed the out of touch Magpies at the back, Bell outclassed them in the middle and Tueart softened up United for Royle’s late double scoring burst with two easily taken penalties.
… Watson has certainly found his first division feet, providing a link with Mike Doyle that few front lines are going to crack.
Malcolm MacDonald’s long awaited confrontation with Dave Watson never materialised. It was Doyle who played McDonald off the park, reducing Supermac to just one scoring effort.
I believe manager Tony Book has found the ideal full back partnership in Ken Clements and Willie Donachie. Clements looks a certainty to make the top grade even after just two games. and Donachie has made a superb start to the season.
Bell commanded the midfield with non-stop Asa Hartford and Alan Oakes, and Royle earns man-of-the-match award for his unstinting efforts in attempting to shake up to the goal standard, after scoring only once since his Christmas Eve move from Everton.
