… On the day, Ipswich were poor defensively, but give credit where credit is due, Wyn Davies made ultimate use of his best talents and the happy Welshman said afterwards “I just couldn’t believe how much room I was given”.
It took only five minutes for City to establish a lead, and maybe the fact that Davies usually laid the ball off to fellow strikers had become too fixed in Ipswich minds. Whatever, Mike Doyle sent a purposeful ball into the Town penalty area, directly on to the head of the Welshman. Would it go to Franny or would it go to Colin? “Gotcha!” thought Wyn as he back-headed over the advancing, and diminutive, for a goalkeeper, Laurie Sivell.
Doyle was part and parcel of the second goal, too. After 24 minutes, he took one of his long throws which found Wyn unattended. He nodded the ball on, and in steamed lan Mellor to score as Sivell punched the ball on to “Spider’s” body.
Shortly after this, Franny Lee crossed to find “The Leap”, and the ball left the Davies cranium to make contact with that of Bell, who easily scored the third.
Three up at the interval and City were coasting. In the 50th minute, the Blues added another one, courtesy of Lee. Franny picked up the ball outside the penalty area and twisted this way and that to send two opponents into limbo.Then he moved to his right and smashed a superb goal away to Sivell’s right.That was that.
There was one amusing moment when Derek Jefferson tripped Doyle as the latter was bearing down on goal. When the Ipswich player saw the look on “Doyley’s” face, he retreated rapidly to the sanctuary of his own defence. He was booked for his pains.
